Bread Street Kitchen

One of the joys living in Hong Kong is having all the quality restaurants from famous chefs in your neighbourhood. Sitting around the open kitchen, bar area with a modern mix of table lamps and pendants, and furniture in an obvious warm tone, we started our weekend brunch with a glass of cocktail and a bakery basket (pain as raisins, croissant, pain au chocolate) ($38)!

Breakfast gimlet ($98) is certainly a wake up drink, complemented with a great complexity from Bombay sapphire gin, grapefruit bitters & orange , marmelade tomato paste, ginger and lime juice. And best of all, Bread Street Kitchen launched the heavenly "Bottomless Lazy Loaf” to enjoy free flow of cocktail and wines for the two-hour brunch with an extra $188!

Yellowfin tuna ceviche ($158) is such a fresh appetizer to start our day! The fish melted in mouth and finished with creamy avocado, but then giving us a pleasant shock by the sweet onion and sesame vinaigrette.

And if you are looking for a comprehensive egg affair, be prepared to make some tough decisions from the brunch. Don’t miss out the Eggs Royale ($148 HKD). Take a gulp of silky smooth smoked salmon and poached eggs cushioned on an avocado complemented with the never gone wrong Hollandaise sauce, is simply heaven.

For mains, we opted for the highly recommended daily roast with root vegetables & yorkshire pudding ($428 for 2 to share) which cannot be missed. Individual sweetness of each veggie make for a powerful and moreish taste;beef were grilled to perfect pink complemented with a pungent truffle balsamic vinegar. The overall presentation showcased the best part of every ingredient beauty on the plate! Yum!

I am still able to recall the episode Gordon ramsay showcasing sharper’s pie at his home cooking TV series few years ago. And now back to his restaurant at the expensive street in HK, Shepherd’s pie with braised lamb, potato puree, brioche garlic crumbs ($208) is well seasoned, with a crunchy top of crust, without overpowering the unique lamb flavour.

Make sure to save room for dessert as numerous desserts are well designed to satisfyy everyone. Failed to just pick one, we sampled a wide selection. We have a lovely mug of strawberries, chantilly, eton mess that is topped with my favourite meringue ($88) and Coconut sorbet and generous layers of mellowed pineapple carpaccio($88) dressed in passion fruit sauce that makes up for the tropical approach to dessert.

Getting our sweet tooth satisfied, we concluded our meal with sticky toffee pudding, muscovado caramel and clotted cream ($88), is a sweet and comforting kind of dessert with a very rich texture; miles away from the sickly sweet one.

Brining the high standard of food quality and consistency to Hong Kong, Bread Street is a successful case, satisfying our picky stomach!

Colourful pastries hidden in Wan Chai

Strudel ($42), one of the signatures at pantry is freshly made to order. Two layers of caramelised green apple cubes and custard were stacked in between the flaky pie crust. Subtly sweet and light in texture for me.

Sadly the display cake was locked inside a not-so-seductive plastic box; certainly differed from my visual expectations. If the lady behind the counter hadn't given me such recommendations, I would have never tried it.

The colourful lego block simply stood out among all other cake beauties at the display window. Green lego block- Lime bavaroise blends in so well with the citrus jelly and jam in between, making it a refreshing oasis among all other pastry we have tried at Pantry Bread & Pstries.

While the blue one is blueberry cheese cake, with a sickly purplish blue filling in an overly soft texture which didn’t impress both of our taste buds and eyeballs. At a price of $54/piece, the lady at the counter did recommend the remaining lego blocks, yet I shouldn’t give them another chance.

To fill the stomach with sophisticated floral dessert, you'd better decide on the rose raspberry champaign pastry ($44). Blended so well into the floral autumn mood board, the rose moose, pink jelly and the velvety red sponge cake all had creamy and smooth texture, with a little touch of raspberry jam in the middle, adding an exciting complexity to the pastry.

TURN OFF Cake base is a tad floury and wet, unlike the usual fluffy sponge cake. ( possible culprit might be the moist of the mousse.

What did Alice eat in the Wonderland?

Transforming the eat-me and drink-me fantasy at Alice in the wonderland to reality, DK Cuppa is now offering a Jasmine themed tea set. True to the symbol of Jasmine- dream and creation of possibilities, DK hopes to encourage patrons creating their own wonderland. The message is profound!

From both the presentation and tasting standpoint, the sweet part is our instant favourite, including macaron, poker cookies and eat-me cupcakes all made of delicate Jasmine, rose truffle in rasberry filling, and the eat-me hazel nut truffle.

Savoury part of this Jasmine tea set at DK Cuppa is another surprise to us, with a set of cold platter ( cocktail prawn, scallop, sweet potato cubs, escargots, and parma ham) dipped into a pot of aromatic truffle mushroom fondue! We can make a wishby burning the edible charm ( with the symbol of luck/ Believe/ Sleep/ Wish/ Transfrm) on top of the fondue which gives a bit of mildly sweet carmalised aroma.

All colours you can see from the plates to drinks at this Jasmine tea set are natural indeed. The tea set comes with the option of hot or cold butterfly pea floral tea that counterbalances the sweetness of dessert. Adding the apple syrup will change the originally blue to an eye catching purple!

And this is not the end of the tea set! it's continued with a make-a-wish moment. Write your wish and take a photo with your friends and clip this at the store's wall. It's lovely, isn't it?!

These little personal touch simply impressed me. I think girls have a lot to cheer for certainly, with these sophisticated details. Highly recommend!

A welcome addition to the Sai Ying Pun fare scene!

Chico Chica is full of striking pieces of colourful tiles, covering the wall, floor and even the table that makes a gorgeous accent to this spanish-asian fusion restro.

The stand out dish is the seafood paella for two ($168) with fresh clams and shrimps in complementing hue of asian clay pot. Made with house made stock and softie paste (garlic, onion and tomato), the paella has soaked up all the essence of ocean goodness, while surprisingly complemented with minced pork with a small proportion of fat that adds complexity and richness to the dish.

On offers are tapas and dishes that perfectly glimmer a mix of spanish and asian hues.  We started with its tortilla, bread tomato $68 and 48-month Iberia paleta rom the new spanish brand Covap ($118) which are all thrilling;  but for Rocket bikini,it isn’t at my priority; complimented with sesame sauce.

Despite our fullness, we couldn't resist the churros with mocha dip and expresso ice cream. It always melt my heart as it always does in Madrid. Stuff the deep friend tough into the hot and bitter sweet mocha dip is def heaven; but It would have given me the right expectation if the dip is thicker -so that the churros is coated with the creamy sauce immediate.

Apart from food, what draws my attention most in Chico Chia is the blue and white patterned hexagonal floor tile which reminds me Gaudi’s creation at La Pedrera in Barcelona. This restore simply impressed me with its attention in detail in both food and environment.

If you are looking for spanish food in town while aiming something casual (like tapas!), Chico Chica would be your choice with reasonable price!

Brilliant Italian restro in town- with the love for freshness and adventure

Concealed on the busy Wyndham street, Cecconi's introduces Italian dishes that fits adventurous patrons or those who are looking for some good old fashion food at fine dining setting. The whole restaurant is separated mainly into three parts, the bar, the main dining area along the wine cellar and the corridor side separated by glass doors which offer more privacy to diners.

We started with the beef carpaccio ($168), which is beautifully presented and a fresh entree to the meal, along with the the beetroot, radish, shallow and black garlic that add crunchiness and spiciness. One thing that all entree share for sure is the love for freshness.

Choice of entree is so much fun! Next up was the Grilled asparagus served with parmesan and aged balsamic ($138).The runny poached fried egg which was a real surprise to us, delighting the eyes as well as palate. The highlight of this entree definitely lies in the aesthetically pleasing yolk with a contrastingly crunchy top!

If you want something light and fresh, with the natural flavours of seafood shining through, Panfried scallop, apple, caper and dark rye ($168) is another winner. Scallops are slightly fried for a golden top and a soft and juicy middle. I am thinking about my next visit to Cecconi's haha!

And best of all, I love the wine the restro recommended! (both red and white)

Certainly one of the highlights of this meal was the following main. We simply devoured the whole roasted lamb rump, with farro and shallot ($298). The rice and oats are soft; absorbing the essence of the dish. Roasted to a perfect pink, the lamb was incredibly luscious, tender, with its uniquely strong flavour. Fans of lamb will absolutely adore this main. Trust me on this and give it a try- you might just in love with this all over again.

From a presentation stand point, the next dish is surperb. The pan fried sea bass, complemented perfectly with a colourful chickpea salsa, chorizo, avocado and red pepper. The only turn off might possibly be the a bit overly cooked sea bass.

We then continued our meal with a carp dish. I love the colour of the prawn risotto with preserved lemon and basil ($218) but the risotto itself is not as impressive as the garnish of the dish.

Made for a perfect ending, we are served with three sets of dessert. For my table, balsamic ice-cream inspired more polarized reactions than others; some might not even plug it into dessert category thanks to its pungent taste. To me, the balsamic ice-cream surprisingly complemented the layers of strawberry cheese cake, strawberry jam and dried strawberries ($88); adding a refreshing punchy sourness. Love that Cecconi's is not trying to appeal patrons with traditional cuisine, but instead offering adventurous options.

Chocolate fondant with salted caramel ice-cream ($88) is just done; without much lava dashing out of the cake as expected.

For the last dessert, Pear and rhubarb crumble, custard and lemon curd ice-cream ($88) is a refreshing round up with its strong lemon flavour; yet the crumble is not as crunchy as I imagined; it tasted like the dried shredded coconut instead.

Highly recommend this place, with amazing food and service. Environment matters too! :D

Young and modern edition of dim sum place

Served super hot, with strong truffle aroma, this signature bun ($49/3) is stuffed with chopped mushrooms while successfully mimicking a real one! (And I love their dish with ants/ flies pattern) .

While stepping into Social Place HK and you will be immediately captivated by it's table tennis, modern interior and industrial pendants, transforming traditional Chinese restaurant into something our younger generation would love!

That brilliant green colour announces to our patrons that it’s chock full of vitamins and refreshing crunchiness. Wrapped with cabbage , the smoked duck veg rolls was adorned by carrots and cucumber slices! Cold appetiser plata ($108) also includes Spicy baby Cucumber ($48) which is something new to me and it’s a must-order!

Veggies, tofu or fried rice was adorned by the golden glowing sheen of crab roe , with a delicate mix of ginger to balance the “cooling" and “heating” of the body as what Chinese tradition embracing.

It's the best way to eat  eating with bare hand: I especially like the Social place’s signature grilled baby pigeon (Right now it’s at a discount of $38 each!) which has crispy skin, and meat that was overflowed with juice! .

Great traditional Chinese dishes and dim sum revamped with inventive techniques and ingredients, Social Place is sure to become one of our favourite casual hangout spots!

An epic Halloween meal:I dare you to eat this!

Before we start digging the graveyard, we were served with the “Creepy Eyeballs” salad, “Witch’s Brew” soup that fit the theme perfectly with strong visual stimulus; yet not something distinctive.

Haunted Graveyard”- Barbecued ribs are poked with two syrups, impressive Frankenstein green for cream sauce and bloody red for ketchup.

Black French fries in black carbon flavour as if you are staying at the graveyard; with a cute little touch of pumpkin-like mandarin. Clever mix of ingredients!

Keep stingy Jack away by…filling up the red pepper lantern with truffle and rice rather than the flickering glow. Colourful match of prawns, yellow turnip coffin and sickly green cream sauce. TURN OFFs rice and seafood is lack of seasoning;

Dessert is rather cute at this Halloween set. Black waffle with sesame paste; has given me a satisfying contrast of crispiness and fluffiness all in one bite with a scoop of Movenpick chocolate ice-cream, longan eyeballs and gummy snakes. A highlight of flavour and texture among the set!

DRINKS Espuma designed two festive cocktail: En Tu Corazon (alcohol infused) in either blood red or golden yellow with disgusting herbal seeds mimicking horrifying insect eggs.

Vibes: relaxing, and full of personal space with assured service. Exceptional dining experience amid the panoramic view of concrete jungles, natural greens and sufficient sunlight through the french windows along the restro.

*$498 for two at Central branch; $398 at Tsim Sha Tsui Branch. and this is only available from 24th-31st Oct!

Slow-cook Philosophy

To the delight of health conscious eaters🌱, @foxtailandbroomcorndelivered signature noodles with no MSG, no trans fat, no deep fried; while embracing slow-cook philosophy. .

"Nagasaki", cold somen noodles 🍜with almond crusted chicken in wooden fish and seaweed sauce($78). Setting our tastebud and stomach at good place to rest, the broth was light and clean. Chicken breast was unexpectedly tender and juicy inside while contrastingly crunchy outside thanks to the the almond crush.

A small dish of home made kimchi was good enough for extra intensity and freshness. Along with the noodles ranging from ramen, to udon and delicate glass noodles, house made fruit tea was refreshing. 🍹(Passion fruit, grapefruit juice, apple slice and lime juice). No service charge.

Coffee fare in Hong Kong

A weekend well spent brings a week of content🌸 With cement wall designs hanging with chalkboard menu and pendant bulb, combined with wood furniture set the good mood at weekend!

We opted for a hot-enough Latte ($42) and a Newyorker Bagel with generous serving of rockets, cream cheese and savoury smoked beef!
Foam was well executed; and the coffee was still so hot after adding milk.

All day breakfast was just done so. ($88) the biggest letdown was the scramble egg with strong milk flavour dominating what an egg should taste like. Classic bacon and sausage with not-so-crunchy salad filled the plate without much surprise.
